Initially, the first few months following a tree transplant have the roots remaining inside the root ball. However, some of the roots will continue to grow well past the root ball. It’s important to check the level of moisture in soil periodically through the week. The simplest way to do this is to use a screwdriver or other sharp and long object. Plunge it into the soil and make sure it’s easy to get it at least half a foot in. If you can’t get it half a foot in with ease there isn’t enough water in the soil.
