How to Check for Tree Health and Security
The health of your trees can be difficult to determine, but
doing an annual checkup for your trees can help to have problems noticed
sooner. In fact, having tree care professionals carry out that annual checkup
is a great way to ensure health and safety concerns are found as soon as
possible.
Is the growth of your tree(s) in the current year similar to
the past year or is it much less or much faster? Fast growth doesn’t
necessarily mean good health for your tree, but if there is a dramatic
reduction in growth rate can be an indication that there is poor health with
the tree.
Look at the branch tips or the tree top. The current
branches are usually smaller in diameter and a different color. Also inspect
the color, size and leaf distribution. Look at individual leaves and the whole
crown for differences between the branches and/or sections of the crown.
Inspect the base of the tree trunk for damage. For example,
string trimmers or rodents), or if there is a flat side to the trunk. If you
find damage consult with a professional arborist.
Healthy trees can actually fall down. You might be surprised
to discover that a lush, green tree is not actually structurally safe. Inspect
trees anytime, but especially after a storm occurs. Have a look at the
branches, crown, trunk, and area around the tree roots for common dangers:
- Cracks, cavities and fungi
- Hanging, broken and dead branches
- Weak branch unions or trunks
- Recent lean, especially if the soil or grass is lifted on one side
- Encircling root compressing the trunk
It is important for you to maintain the health of your trees
and to ensure that they are safe to prevent damage to your property and risk
personal injury. Having a tree care professional providing annual maintenance
is a great way to ensure you have healthy trees.
